Make your label smart

For a pharmaceutical company we designed a label with a sterilisation indicator. This label was to be adhered to the sheaths containing the instruments to be sterilised. On this label, there is a pink sterilisation indicator which turns brown after steam sterilisation.

There were many constraints: resistance to solvents (such as alcohol used for cleaning the instruments before autoclaving) and the indicator must change color when autoclaving after 15 minutes at 121°C, thus confirming that the equipment is sterilised. Also the adhesive must be suitable for the aggressive conditions under which sterilisation takes place.
